Holguín is a province located in the eastern part of Cuba. The provincial capital is also called Holguín and is known as the “City of Parks” due to its numerous squares and green spaces. This is the third most populated city in Cuba.
We will head out for the Hotel.  You will have time to set up your own bike or meet our mechanic and set up your rental bike to fit you. Our evening meal at the hotel will give us an opportunity to chat and introduce ourselves.

Villa Cayo Saetia In Holguin, Cuba

Today we begin our cycling adventure! After a very short bus transfer, we jump on our saddles. This route will be rolling gentle ups and downs. It will be a good wake up for our legs. We will also have the first contact with everyday life and the Cuban rural landscape.
Also, we will ride through places that are part of the intangible symbols of the Cuban Music, like Cueto and Mayari. These towns are mentioned in “Chan Chan”, the immortal song that the Buena Vista Social Club turned into World hit, and icon of Cuban traditional rhythms.
Our destination is Cayo Saetía, a small island, located off the northeastern coast of Cuba, in the province of Holguín. The island is known for its pristine beaches, lush vegetation, and diverse wildlife. It was initially developed as a private hunting ground for the former Cuban president, Fulgencio Batista, in the 1940s.

Right after a good night’s sleep and breakfast, we saddle up. This morning, we had ahead of us a similarly long ride. This time, we ride towards Sagua de Tánamo and, if feeling like it, into Moa. By the time we get to Sagua, we already have had a decent ride, about 40 mi. This route along the northern side of Holguín and Guantánamo isn’t hilly or tough but it often has side or headwind.
The Bus will be right there to support at any time! Our destination today is Maguana. It is a rural village located a few kilometers west of Baracoa. It is known for its tranquil atmosphere, beautiful countryside, and friendly locals. The area around Maguana is ideal for exploring nature and experiencing the traditional rural life of Cuba.

After a couple of rather long rides, today we engage more in the surrounding way of life and culture. We ride to Baracoa.
Baracoa is the oldest city in Cuba, founded in 1511 by the Spanish conquistador Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar. The city is often referred to as the “first city”, “La Primada de Cuba”, due to its historical significance as the first Spanish settlement in Cuba Baracoa has a rich cultural heritage.
“La Primada de Cuba” is home to various historical sites and landmarks, including the Cathedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, a church dating back to the 19th century. Also, because of its location, Baracoa remained somewhat isolated for many years, therefore today, its people, way of speaking, a lot of its traditional local cuisine, and even musical rhythms are unique within Cuba.
This region in general is known for its tropical rainforest, coconut and cacao plantations, and unique flora and fauna, home the UNESCO World Heritage Landscape “Alexander von Humboldt” National Park.
Above all else, today we meet the local Cycling coach, someone whom we have developed a good friendship with. We deeply admire his dedication in the middle of so much scarcity. His struggle to keep cycling, the sport he loves, alive in Baracoa is nothing less than EPIC!

Tour Biking In Cuba

Our adventure RIDES on! Today we have a long but amazing ride ahead of us. Our destination is Guantánamo some 90 mi away. We will even go over one of the 7 wonders of Cuban Engineering, the Viaduct “La Farola”, connecting the north and south points of the Nipe-Sagua-Baracoa Mountain Range.
After breakfast, we take the bus and drive to Imίas, a little town on the southern side the mountains, almost by the junction of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. From there, we jump on our bikes and enjoy a gentle rollercoaster with the incentive of the very blue Sea and the rough, partially vegetation-covered marine limestone elevations. There could be arrangements for anyone with the inspiration to ride the whole distance too. We will enjoy mostly a tail wind from here on!
Guantánamo names both the province and its capital city. It dates back to the middle 19th Century and is the source of the most popular demonym in Cuba, to those who are from abroad, of course. “Guantánamera”, the world known song by Joseito Fernández, who never dreamed of his inspiration “Guajira Guantánamera” or “countryside woman from Guantánamo” mixed with José Martί’s verses would end up being an icon of the Cuban music internationally.
However, this city is internationally recognized due to the presence of the notorious Guantánamo Bay Naval Base. The naval base has been a subject of historical controversy and gained attention for its detention camp back in 2002.

Cathedral Lights In Santiago De Cuba

This morning, we ride on to Santiago de Cuba. The route will also be undulated, but with a tailwind and the opportunity of riding through numerous small towns and being in contact with a few local private businesses. This ride is from hotel to hotel, all the way! However, the bus will be there for support all along as well, and the moment you feel like relaxing for a while, or for good, with a cold drink, you can jump on it!
Tonight, we make it to Cuba’s second largest city. Founded in 1515, Santiago de Cuba is one of the oldest cities in Cuba and played a pivotal role in the country’s history. It served as the capital of Cuba officially until 1592 when Havana took over that role. Santiago de Cuba has been a center of revolutionary movements, rebellions, and significant events in the struggle for independence and the Cuban Revolution.

Learn While Enjoying A Bike Tour In Eastern Cuba

And here we go again. Today we will explore Santiago de Cuba and will learn a lot about the way locals get by and will have contact with private entrepreneurs. It is also an option for a light recovery ride to the beach in Siboney. However, if you feel like taking a challenge, on the way to the beach there is La Gran Piedra.
La Gran Piedra, also known as The Great Stone, is a massive rock formation located in the Sierra Maestra mountains near Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. It is one of the largest stones in the world, with a weight of approximately 70,000 tons.
La Gran Piedra is made of solid granite and measures about 51 meters (167 feet) long, 25 meters (82 feet) wide, and 30 meters (98 feet) high. It sits atop a mountain at an elevation of approximately 1,225 meters (4,019 feet) above sea level, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Caribbean Sea.
It is a hard climb of about 9 miles at 7.4 % of average gradient. Nevertheless, it is a very rewarding effort in the end. From up there the views are simply spectacular!

This part of the journey offers breathtaking views of the sea and the Sierra Maestra mountains. As you approach Brisas Sierra Mar, you’ll be greeted by the beautiful resort area, nestled amidst nature, and offering a relaxing atmosphere.

The trail will lead us to the specific location where Fidel Castro’s hideout was situated in the Sierra Maestra mountains. Today we head back up North to Holguίn. We will drive out from Bayamo, just a short transfer to Cauto Cristo.
This is one of the most fertile plains in the country. It is named after the Cauto River, Río Cauto in Spanish. It is the longest river in Cuba, stretching approximately 343 kilometers (213 miles). It flows from East to West. This River originates in the Sierra Maestra mountains and flows in a northwesterly direction, cutting through valleys and plains, before reaching the coastal plain near Manzanillo.
From there, it meanders towards the northeast and eventually empties into the Gulf of Guacanayabo. The Cauto River is significant to the region in terms of agriculture. Its waters are used for irrigation to support agriculture, particularly the cultivation of sugarcane, citrus fruits, and other crops.
After we ride around Holguίn again, we will head to Guardalavaca. This is a popular beach resort area located on the northeastern coast of Cuba, in the Holguín Province.
